Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the meaning of ideal death of Korean. Data were collected by 26 Korean men and women using open-ended interview from March to June, 2005. The contents of interviews were tape-recorded with the consent of participants. The study questions were "what do you think about the meaning of ideal death?" Data were analyzed using content analysis which is one of qualitative data analysis. Study results were as follows: Five essential themes and 15 subcategories were identified. Five essential themes were ¡¯comfortable death¡¯, ¡¯prepared death¡¯, ¡¯beautiful death¡¯, death which did not give any trouble to family¡¯, and ¡¯death to come¡¯. Subcategories in ¡¯Comfortable death¡¯ were ¡®death without any pain and agony¡¯ and ¡®natural death¡¯ Subcategories in ¡¯Prepared death¡¯ were ¡®death after alive fully(period)¡¯, ¡®death after living well¡¯, ¡®death prepared¡¯, ¡®not dirty death¡¯, and ¡®not horrible death¡¯ Subcategories in ¡¯Beautiful death¡¯ were ¡®dying in the familial place¡¯, ¡®dying in the warm, beautiful, quite places¡¯, in ¡®company with the family in the article of death¡¯, ¡¯spiritual death¡® Subcategories in Death which did not give any trouble to family¡¯ were ¡®death unrelated to suffering to family¡¯ and ¡®death which did not give any burden to the family¡¯ Subcategories in ¡¯Death to come¡¯ were ¡®immortal death¡¯ and ¡®meaningful death¡¯.
